According to the docs, fam can use the kernel to catch file changes instead of 
polling the file system - which makes it a lot more efficient.

BTW, when I run /usr/bin/fam as root:

Cannot register service: RPC: Unable to receive; errno = Connection refused
fam[22527]: can't register with portmapper.

I'm guessing this is my problem.  I'll check into it later today.
