Print out the XF86config file and the /var/log/XFree86.0.log file. The
first, XF86config, sounds like it it set to probe for memory. The
XFree86.0.log file will show what it found. This should also tell you
what you have for a video card.
Once you post both those files we can start to look at what is
happening.
