Looks like this is your best bet.  Seems that the Netopia is the thing 
that only allows one computer on at a time.  Seems that PPPoE will work 
through the Netopia to Earthlink.  So you can use any "DSL router"[1] 
between the Netopia and your home network.

Bypass mode that Nate mentions seems also to be bridged mode and you can 
find some discussion and links to details here:

Another option would be to use a different DSL modem that isn't brain 
damaged.  Will an Actiontec or Cisco 678 work with Earthlink?  I don't 
know and EL will certainly not support it, but it may be worth a try if 
you don't have to buy one to experiment.
