Since you've mentioned it and I use it for the purposes you describe,
may 
I recommend OpenBSD. The documentation is excellent and the OS is very
solid. I've also found that support on the newgroups is good as well,
if 
you've taken the time to read the manuals. There are differences
between 
Linux and BSD however, to use an example, it would probably be like 
switching from RedHat to Debian or vice-versa.. both are (at this time)
free  
Unix-like operating systems but with subtle differences.
