The Germans also have *MUCH* wider availability of higher-speed connections, 
while the telcos in the US got greedy and priced it out of reach for most 
folks.  How many people do you know that have ISDN?

It's not a matter of archiving (though it _IS_ handy to have that stuff 
available locally),  it's a matter of transport.  And at this point it's 
still more economical to transport large quantities of data that way,  at 
least here in the US.
