I'm in a similar boat, so I too would be interested in hearing about
anyone's pro & con experiences with Gentoo, especially for a family
desktop.

My son and I are about to start building a new PC for our family room.
I was all set to put Debian on it, since we use that now -- until I
heard Collins talk about Gentoo this week.  I've gotten surprising
performance from my old Pentium 150 through some custom compiling, so
the bit-tweaker in me is mighty attracted to building everything in
the box from source.
