Keep in mind that "not being used" isn't something thats as easy as
looking at the base web page for that site... 

- - They could be using the domain for email. 

- - They could be using the domain for some internal only use, and want
to make sure no one else uses it externally. 

- - They could plan to use the domain for some project that hasn't
gotten off the ground yet. 

The best thing to do is mail the tech contact and ask. 
If that doesn't get you anything, you are out of luck unless they
don't re-new the domain.
