It's working again.
I wiped the font dir. Re-created it. Copied the font files back in. Re-ran
mkfontscale and mkfontdir, no luck.
But, I got a clue from mkfontscale complaining about not being able to
find the "family" for the *.fon files. Well, I guess that created a b0rken
fonts.scale file -- wish it would have not created it instead. So, I 'rm
*fon', re-run mkfontscale and mkfontdir.
Fire up X, and it's all fine now.
Beats me what happened with the old font directory. *&@!%&#!
