I ran Mandrake 8.x on a computer with the ATI Mach 64 chipset.  

I have had a lot of problems with boot floppies.  For example, I tried to 
reuse some ones that were lying around.  I had a lot of odd problems which 
were probably because the media was unstable.  Try buying a new package of 
floppies and remaking the boot disks.

If you still have a problem with new boot disks, I would suspect that you 
might have a hardware problem.
