I assume you already have DHCP enabled? What happens if you run dhclient
or dhcpcd manually on the ath0 interface? (If you run it manually make
sure debug mode is on so you see what's happening.)
If that still doesn't work - what accesspoint are you using? You might
need the madwifi groupkey patch which sets the unicast groupkey properly.
There is a bug in the code surrounding the selection of transmit key
for unicast packets like DHCP. The patch corrects this and makes DHCP,
ARP (and thus inter-client ping) etc. work properly.
We had to apply this patch to get Windows XP and Linux (madwifi) clients
to get a DHCP IP address. We are using madwifi in the WPA accesspoint.
If the groupkey is not set properly DHCP, ARP, etc. might not work. You
may be able to work around this problem by setting the groupkey rekeying
timeout very short (10 to 30 seconds) in your accesspoint. What you
want is for the groupkey rekeying to happen before the DHCP client gives
up on the DHCPDISCOVER process.
Hope this helps,
Jim
