Celibrity is probably not the word I would choose because few people outside 
software know who he is.  Compare that to Bill Gates or {insert favorite 
Hollywood actor }.  I agree that there's certainly a component of cult of 
personality with Stallman.

I don't think this is the main reason people want to know his opinion.  I 
think Stallman has credibitily now because 30 years ago [with great insight], 
he realized the perils of restrictive software licensing - when no one 
generally used software.

The whole idea of codified sharing, embodied in GPL and implemented by FSF / 
GNU / OSS (and Linux) would not exist to the extent it does today without a 
stubborn, willful person who lives his ideals - despite their unpopularity in 
some [commercial] realms.

Few of us have this ability.
