This was driving me up the wall with firefox as well. I really use the
emacs style command line editing commands. 

The solution that I found that works for me: 

edit your ~/.gtkrc-2.0
add: 

gtk-key-theme-name = "Emacs"

restart firefox. 

Hope that works for others.
