[clue-tech] profile.d why

Ok guys and gals. 

I'm looking for info on why /etc/profile.d exists. I have made many
asumptions about why it exists but have yet to find any hard evidence of
why. Most of my google searches have turned up nothing more than, "hey
why does <DISTO> not have this?" 

I have checked with pathname.org and linuxbase.org, nothing. So I am
comming to you and asking WHY?
