Not knowing exactly Spotlight's functionality, the 'Unix' way to do file
system indexing and searching is Glimpse. The idea for Glimpse is to run
a the indexing program off-hours, then search with the glimpse command line
tool.

The 3.6 version (under BSD license) is at:
