Hi All,
I have been fooling on a cheap home experiment with an
external SCSI "Array" from Compaq/Digital and trying
to control it with a card that comes up saying it is
an Array 1000 card ... and it is a 789x ... I know the
exact chipset of the card is probably necessary to
really know how or whether it is possible to run the
thing... I'd Rather run it as a hardware RAID under
linux
I thought for some reason that the aacraid part of the
kernel is what I needed, but since looking at comments
in the driver code I believe my chipset is not
supported.
I did get in touch with an engineer from HP who
confirmed that the controller in the external array
was
"dumb". I say that because adaptec told me that their
controller might conflict the controller on the
external array end.
Using adaptec software that ran under a rescue "DOS"
disk I was able to configure and initialize the
array... But linux only sees it as separate scsi disks
in the pack. ( I want to see my fault tolerant RAID5
arry called monkey :)
So I am thinking of getting a pci controller that I
know supports hardware raid under linux ... but I am
cheap:) I have had my best luck with Mylex. I think I
finally got a card from some company I think Vortex to
work before...
I guess after this long winded message I have
basically 2 questions...
1) Is there an outside module to get the Array 1000
family to work with linux?
2)If I get another controller that I know is supported
am I going to have to reinitialize the array ...
(watching paint dry for many hours) ?
Thanks,
-Mike
