Thanks to the guys from the Uptime Group for the Asterisk presentation
at CLUE-North tonight. Very neat stuff.

The media server we make at work does 2048 ports of SIP conferencing,
and chews through enough bandwidth doing it that it has to be fed with
fiber. Seeing the open-source software implementation in Asterisk doing
similar stuff on a much smaller scale is nifty. Especially all in
software. To do the size/scale we're at, it's all custom code running
in DSP chips with a very fat backplane!

Anyone can now easily build their own PBX and learn how dial plans, call
routing, call flow, etc... all work... and can trigger arbitrary code on
the Linux box to do "other things".

It's not as hard as it might look at first, peering into the
configuration files. And that MySQL work that's going on to integrate
Asterisk into a database backend for configuration and data storage...
that is cool.

The anti-telemarketer spin on the presentation really had me laughing...
I think I need to build an Asterisk box for the house now!

It's really fun to see people interested in telephony... that's not
something you see every day working with traditional telcos! (GRIN)

As far as the raffle/winning a book, I'll do my best to do a review on
the C Shell book sometime "soon".

We have some rabid tcsh fanatics at work, so finding a few folks to help
critique a standard C shell book should be kinda entertaining, anyway!

Me, I'm just a dumb bash guy. At least it's hidden down in
/usr/local/bin/bash when I need it on our Sun boxes! ;-)
