OK, I did it, full 64-bit reinstall, since this is a learning system -
followed the handbook - now alsa works with the onboard sound -
including mplayer and codecs - I am streaming KBCO now, so all is
good.  No X yet, but do I really need it???

Nah - it is almost emerged - after i tar/ssh all the mp3's over
