I'm not using alsa, just the basic sound modules Debian loads for 
emu10k1.  But here are some KDE ideas:

The speaker button is part of kmix (settings -> configure kmix -> enable 
system tray volume control).

In kmix you need PCM and master on and adjusted to the appropriate levels.
