[clue-tech] Old non-intel Linux boxen?

Along those same lines, I have an old series 1 single tuner Tivo - I
forget which model, but I can check when I get home. It was my mom's,
and the modem died on it, probably from a thunderstorm or something. My
parents didn't have broadband at the time, so slapping a NIC in there
didn't do them any good, and the external modem solution didn't sound
easy to get working. So, they got a new one and gave me the old one. I
have a dual tuner DirecTivo, and I've successfully got a NIC working in
it and a kernel module or two installed so that I can run telnet, ftp,
and unscramble features on it so I can download shows to my computer
from it. So, I know I could help somebody do the same thing to this one
if somebody wants it. I know it has a 20 gig HD in it, so that's the
first thing you'll want to do - get a new drive and backup the image
from the old drive to it, and start hacking. I'll give it to the first
person who asks me for it, but some things to know before you email me:

1) Tivo service costs like $13 a month, and stand alone tivos are damn
near worthless/annoying without it. Everytime you change the channel,
you get a message telling you you're not subscribed or something like that.

2) Getting the thing hacked the first time takes some work - and a
network card you'll need to purchase from here:

3) Pulling shows off of it also isn't a one click operation if you plan
on moving them to DVD. I use an application called TyTools that allows
you to see what shows you have on it, and then lets you delete or
download them. I download mine to my computer, then I edit them quick
to remove commercials, then I vob-mux them and then burn them to DVD.
I've gotten pretty fast at doing that, but it's still not as easy and
clicking a single button and walking away.

So, if anybody is interested in playing with it, it's all yours!
