[clue-tech] bind9 on Ubuntu 5.10

I can't seem to get bind to start:

$ /etc/init.d/bind9 start

$ tail /var/log/syslog
...
starting BIND 9.3.1 -u bind -t /var/lib/named
found 1 CPU, using 1 worker thread
loading configuration from '/etc/bind/named.conf'
none:0: open: /etc/bind/named.conf: permission denied
loading configuration: permission denied
exiting (due to fatal error)

$ ll /etc/bind/named.conf
-rw-r-----  1 bind bind 1611 Apr 19  2005 /etc/bind/named.conf

I changed the permissions on named.conf from 640 to 644 in case that was
the issue (somehow not running as bind), but that did not help.
