I'll also add that while I agree CVS has many warts, I've used it on several
large projects (25,000+ files) quite successfully.

There is also a CVSNT project, which first started out as a port to
WindowsNT, but has since been ported back to Unix/Linux.  It fixes
many of CVS's problems, while maintaining backward compatibility.
