It sounds like SUSE has chosen frequencies that your monitor doesn't
like. Doesn't SUSE offer a "safe mode" boot option? (It's been a while
since I installed SUSE...) If so, you might try booting into that and
running SaX2 to reconfigure the monitor settings -- or edit
/etc/X11/xorg.conf and replace the horizontal and vertical refresh
rates with ones better suited to your monitor.
Look for these lines:
HorizSync
VertRefresh
Your monitor's documentation should include the optimal horizontal and
vertical refresh rates. Just replace those and then start X and it
should be OK.
