Another tip from the installfest.

Many of you may be died-in-the-wool vi (or emacs, uggh) users like
myself, but new users will probably want to use a gui editor.such as
Kate to update configuration files. There area few obstacles. Here's
what to do for Kubuntu. Similar actions should work for the Gnome
editor of choice on Ubuntu. Gnome may have a root mode editor choice,
but I don't remember.

[1] You will probably encounter permission problems if you try to edit
root-owned files from a normal user session, so you need to invoke
Kate as root.

[2] in a terminal session, enter 'xhost +' or 'xhost localhost' .This
will allow the Kate session running as root to access the screen.
Security freaks will shudder at this option.

[3] enter 'sudo kate'. Lots of crapola error messages will appear in
the terminal log, but the Kate gui screen will eventually open.

[4] When you select the open dialog, by default only your personal
directories will appear, and even after you select the root directory,
most of the root directories and files will be suppressed. Click on
the Tools icon (a wrench) and select 'Show hidden files'. Now you can
navigate to any directory and file.

If anyone has a better procedure, let us know.

Enjoy,
