Cheaper alternatives to tape:

Firewire or USB hard drive enclosure with removable
hard drive bay OR multiple enclosures without
removable drives. Fastest backup option and cheaper
per gigabyte of storage. Does not require
compression. Even have the option of doing full
backups daily rather than incremental backups. Both
of which make restoring files a snap.

Remote storage either thru a service or cohost one of
your own boxes. Depends on internet connectivity. No
hassel of moving media offsite.

DVD-RW Media. Limited storage space so will require
compression. Not vulnerable to magnetic fields (but
scratches and dust). May not be suitable for long
time archival. Blu-ray will have even more capacity
but that's not out yet.
