It's a Toshiba,  I forget the model and the manual is in the other room.  It 
was a gift last xmas,  so it's not too terribly old...

I've downloaded,  compiled,  and installed mplayer,  which seems to offer some 
conversion bits as well.  I just need to figure out the right command line 
parameters to feed it,  and give it a try.
