I think Firefox, Thunderbird and OpenOffice all depend on the GTK+ library. There used to be a system variable that had to be set to turn on aliasing in GTK but I don't see it set on my laptop. I think it might have been called ENABLE_XFT. If I remember, I can check on an older computer.
