It turns out that it's a dependency coding problem. On my desktop with
an nVidia card, the restricted modules and extra nVidia stuff are
upgraded automatically with a new kernel. Not so with just the
restricted modules for the wireless card. After upgrading the
restricted modules manually, wireless works just fine on the new
kernel.

Thanks for the info, but it doesn't answer the basic question: is
encryption with these units hardware or software based? - ie can you
do either as long a the software supports it?
