All of these comments are good ones. Yes, we tried all the exportfs
and showmounts tricks. Eventually we realized that the server THOUGHT
it was authenticating the request, but ...


It turns out that the aging switch serving the ports for the problem servers
was failing badly. Since the principle connection (after establishing
bona fides) works via UDP, the client was getting no response from the
server with no error messages. I'm not a developer, but it seems
rather poor form to issue a message "permission denied" when the
actual problem was "no response received". Sigh, lots of time wasted.
