Another indispensable tool for me is partimage.  I use it in combination with gparted.  I find that I can install Ubuntu onto a small (<6 GB) hard disk, image it with partimage, then restore to another machine with a bigger disk.  After restoration I use gparted to expand the partition to fill the bigger disk.
