I did "sudo apt-get... build-essential" and it took about an hour
on dial-up. It went much quicker than I thought it would.
I could see it was installing C/C++ language modules.
So I went directly to testing the compiler.
A simple "Hello World" type program compiled, and executed:
SUCCESS.
As to "module assistant", I am reading about this now.
Since the Install-fest is fast approaching, I am also trying to
figure out, 1)opengl 2) R language/package.
As to WiFi, unless I stumble across some easy solution, I will
shelve that, because I may hve to buy a external USB transeiver.

I like to use the module assistant to make sure I have everything like
that I might need. I run it, update, prepare, and then exit without
building any actual modules. Now I have everythign I need to build
anything, including modules (like VMWare or NVIDIA drivers).
