Give them valid domains?  I don't think they need an actual domain, or 
PTR records.

The smtpd should know its FQDN and be able to say so in the mail 
headers.  That domain should probably exist but reverse lookups 
shouldn't be needed.  If the smtpd is in a domain like Comcast it should 
send via the appropriate mail relays.

I have a system that does all that and is flawless (I have basic header 
checking on the receive side but nothing fancy).

You didn't provide any data on why it was undeliverable or why it was a 
string.
