I haven't used gentoo for years, but I still go to their wiki. It is in my 
opinion one the best, and often contains helpful information on configuration 
of a variety of things even not gentoo related. Here is one on the touchpad 
for Xorg 7.3. It gives many ways of configuring the pad. You may have to 
ignore/replace gentooisms of course.
