FWIW,  the Slackware install I did last on the machine out in the other room,  
a version or so behind the 12.1 I'm running on this machine,  defaulted to 
that for some reason.  Only it wasn't 800x600,  it was 640x480.  Ick!  :-)

I'm really glad to have gotten that one worked out,  though I forget just what 
I had to do to make that happen.  I suspect that it was booting something 
else entirely (Knoppix maybe?) that allowed for different resolutions and 
then mounting the HD and copying that info down to the config file.
