Yesterday, someone posted a question asking how to force his laptop to use external video because the screen is broken. I found something in an article this morning that I think will do the trick.

xrandr --output VGA

It might be necessary to disable internal video first:

xrandr --output LVDS -off

If you need to specify the resolution, try these:

xrandr --output VGA -s 1024x768

or

xrandr --output VGA --mode 1924x768
