I got a .xlsx file.  "Oh, no," I said.  "An Office 2007 file that I 
can't read."

I got the .xls file shortly after, because all the pre-Office 2007 
people complained about the "new format".

Open Office opened the .xlsx without complaint.  (It doesn't yet save in 
.xlsx.)  I had no idea they had caught up already but it was a nice 
surprise.
