X.org has added D-bus and HAL as options when compilling X11.  You still need to have the correct video driver for your card, but D-bus and HAL let X find the appropriate hardware settings in many cases.  There might be some cases where something doesn't work, but I just learned about this during Xmas shutdown.  You can still provide an xorg.conf, in which case, I think X replaces probed settings with the ones in the conf file.

Xorg.conf is certainly much smaller this way.
