My wish for installfest is for someone to show me how the heck sound 
works.  I have a machine where arts dies 
(http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=509563).  So I turned 
it off, as recommended.  Now vlc has no sound.  Changing its settings 
doesn't help.  Adding plugins might help, if I knew which sound system I 
have.

It seems clear that I have drivers for the sound card, and they should 
work.  How to test that piece though?  Is there a way to test that alsa, 
or oss, or esd, or whatever libraries are working?

And then how to work around the arts problem for KDE sounds that want it?

OK, so I don't really care about the superbowl, except that it's after 
installfest and it would be cool to understand sound by then.
