And speaking of installfest...

There's some serious free beer (as in free beer) not to mention perhaps some 12-year-old single malt to anyone who can help me get sound running on my laptop. I recently loaded Ubuntu Studio and have gotten as close as I've ever been, but no cigar. People tell me my sound card probably doesn't support midi, but Timidity and other midi players work fine. Using the Studio distro, I finally got jackd up and running and also managed to get synthesizer sounds to play on Alsa Modular Synth, though it seems to be hit and miss for some reason. But if it can do it once, it can do it twice, nicht wahr ? I simply cannot get playback sound to work in Rosegarden, MuseScore, NoteEdit or NtEd, however.

The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 8100 with ESS Maestro3 sound card... lsmod even shows a snd_maestro3 module loaded. I had no success trying to load a soundfont to the card however.

If no sound gurus are planning to attend, does anyone know of someone who does music production on Linux who could be bribed with alcohol?
