Gentoo puts each version of KDE under it's own directory under /usr[kde3.5|
kde4.[012]].  That way, you can try out a newer version while keeping a safer 
version around.  Is KDE designed for that?  Only because it allows installing 
to a different prefix.  Does it work?  Yep.
