At DeVry, or at home?

I assume you're running synaptic from the menu.  You can try from the 
command line as well.

You can also right click on the menu item and try properties or 
something to see the command it runs.

I've had programs install menu items that assume /usr/games is in your 
path so they have to be edited before they work.
