Nah, it won't negate the effort.  It just limits a little.

Basically, the virtual machine gets to use the same memory that your
host OS is using, so you need to split the 2G of ram between the host
OS (which will require some minimum to work reasonably fast) and the
guest OS (the virtual one).  I started out having 2 Gigs split between
Windows XP (host) and Ubuntu (guest), but things worked 'better' for
me when I upped it to 4G.
