I respectfully disagree; if the time is about a half second's
difference and you're constantly shutting down the machine (say, for a
laptop), then you're actually saving time that does matter for the
lifetime of the compile. Remember: even restoring from a hibernate
session requires re-loading the modules from the ramdisk.

Overall, though, loading modules will take at least a second if not
more during the boot process. As I said in an earlier post, loading
modules just from a /ramdisk/ is slow due to the crazy number of
reference calls that modprobe has to make -- and this example is on a
Core2 Duo @ 2.26GHz.
