The Symbol LS4208 hand-held laser bar-code scanner that Microcenter uses (but doesn't sell, for whatever reason) works perfectly and fast with Linux and Windows. Installation on both was fast and painless. Faster and painlesser on Linux, of course. Scanning any clean barcode is practically instantaneous. Scanning a really f*d up shipping label is usually possible, and the results are trustworthy once gotten. It's not fast, though, and sometimes takes a few tries.

Just thought I'd let you know, in case you're thinking of barcodes for anything. This scanner will pay for itself in saved time and spit.
