Hi Jeff, Normally I can't read your posts because of the PGP signature (I have a too-old version of PGP integrated with my elm which can't decode the signature you attach) but I thought I'd look at this one. > Okay hardware gurus... > My friend installed RHAT 6.2 on his PC. During boot-up, he gets the > following messages: > UMB upper limit segment addres: F5F3 > Invalid system configuration data - run configuration utility > Mouse initialized All it wants you to do is press F2 (I assume, since F1 means just continue without resolving the error) and go into the BIOS setup. Save the BIOS setup and reboot. It should be fine after that. The checksum on the CMOS, which verifies that the data the BIOS read from the CMOS is correct, does not match the data that was read. All it wants you to do is go into the BIOS and choose "save changes" which will re-calculate the checksum. This can also be caused by a dead battery on the motherboard. If the CMOS "forgets" its settings due to a dead battery, the checksum will similarly not match, which will generate the above message. > When he installed RHAT, he hit F1 to continue and was able (AFAIK) to > install. However, when he actually boots up the RHAT system, the computer > stops and never gets to LILO. > I suggested flashing the BIOS (Phoenix BIOS, version 4.04), but I have > limited experience in the BIOS arena. He has not yet tried flashing because > I told him I would ask my 'Linux guru' friends! I would only flash the BIOS if something doesn't work on the system that would be related to the BIOS. It should be a last resort I think, since it's a relatively difficult procedure and can cause lots of grief if some- thing goes wrong. > Suggestions are appreciated. > Gracias > Jeff de nada. -- Jim Ockers (ockers@ockers.net) Ask me about Linux!
