ISDL is actually 144 Kbps since the "D" channel, which is normally not available for moving data in ISDN, is included in the data rate on IDSL. IDSL is less expensive that paying for an ISDN phone line and also pay- ing for and ISDN ISP. My ISDN phone line costs $78.80 per month and UUNet charges $150-$200 per month for 2-channel ISDN Internet service. By contrast, $90 per month for IDSL+ISP is pretty cheap. You can buy T1 phone lines for ~$450 per month for a point-to-point T1 and ~$350 per month for a frame-relay T1. As with the ISDN, you also have to pay an ISP the bandwidth charge for Internet bandwidth over your T1 phone line. This charge can range from $250-$1200 depending on who the ISP is and how good their connection is, etc. InterNAP charges us $750 per month for Internet bandwidth, and we have to buy the two T1 phone lines (one for each end) that move the data from our office to their POP, at about $450 apiece I think. If you have frame-relay it will probably cost you $300-$600 for Internet bandwidth over your $350/mo T1 frame-relay phone line. Unfortunately the "deregulation" in the phone business hasn't resulted in a huge drop in prices for fast phone lines like T1s. -- Jim Ockers (ockers@ockers.net) Ask me about Linux!
