When I used to live in Alabama and used Comcast, initial setup of the account could only be accomplished by using a Windows-only app that would handshake the MAC of my cablemodem with the central server. After that, Linux-only was just fine. While DSL is a bit different from cable, this could be a similar scenario. I did find out after my initial cable install that I could simply call Comcast's central 800 number, give them the make/model of my modem and its MAC and be on my way without needing the Windows software. Perhaps you can do the same thing with Qwest for your DSL service on your DSL trasceiver.
