was pretty Linux-hostile. I had no choice but to pay for either Vista or
XP, and there was ZERO support for Linux by Dell for this model.</FONT></DIV>

<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>Once I got it (XP) I imaged the hard drive and then
installed Ubuntu 7.10. That went OK but there were several annoyances in
getting various bits and peices running properly under Linux. Eventually I
got it all going but it was an exercise in finding various posted solutions and
sorting out which ones worked versus which ones did not. It probably took
20 hours of trial and error and fiddling to get it all running
right.</FONT></DIV>

It has already suffered a failure of a spring in the left mouse button, and
also a battery failure in 2 of 3 cells. The battery failure could
possibly be in the contacts in the chassis not picking up all of the separate
cells.</FONT></DIV>

depot in Houston tomorrow. Luckily it was under warranty for these
failures. Whatever fails 8 weeks from now will not be
