Hello everyone, this will be my first installfest and I wanted to see if someone might be able to help me create a proper backup of my system before moving it to software RAID-1. I recently built a debian lenny machine to play with Xen on and set everything up using LVM, now I would like to move to LVM on top of MD using mdadm. I have this tutorial http://www.howtoforge.com/set-up-raid1-on-a-running-lvm-system-debian-etch which outlines the process for me, but would like any input on potential issues. I would like to create a backup of my system and data before moving everything as I haven't used pvmove in the past to move a live physical volume. This brings me to the point that I don't have to do a live transition, if someone has a better technique that involves using a boot cd and a chroot environment (if this is even needed), please let me know. I know there are a wide range of backup procedures, and assume something along the lines of creating a LVM snapshot and using tar would be sufficient, however googling brings up such a multitude of techniques and various choices for flags when creating the tarball I'm not sure what is considered best practice. Basically I'm fairly new to linux and would like to learn how to make this transition as smooth as possible. I also would like to know if there will be anyone at the installfest that could help me out with 1) creating a proper backup and 2) moving the system over to RAID. I have the two identical hard drives in the box already and have a third hard drive that I can use to back things up to. Thanks for the help and I look forward to meeting people on Saturday.
