<p>One option I've used in situations where I don't have admin rights is portable ubuntu, which runs a linux instance in user land. IIRC, it doesn't require an installer, but instead requires you to extract an archive, and start the instance with a batch script. </p>
<p>I was ultimately not thrilled with performance, but I'm a pretty demanding user, so ymmv.</p>
