[clue] [EVENT] CLUE hosting meeting

I had a Slicehost account for a while and was quite happy.

256 Mb for $25/month was enough to run several low-traffic web sites, but: (1) I used Nginx instead of Apache to save memory. Tried Apache first, and it was using too much memory. Don't know whether Drupal runs well under Nginx, esp. short URLs as Nginx has a different rewrite syntax. (2) I was not running SpamAssassin, which is also a bit of a memory hog. Again, I tried it and it was using too much memory. (3) If I recall correctly, other Slicehost customers complained about "control panel" type apps, many of which are also (as I understand it) memory hogs. I never had one on that account so I can't comment.

In the end I decided that managing a VPS wasn't worth the trouble for my purposes, and so I switched to shared hosting at Bluehost. Very happy there. Their servers run Apache, Spamassassin, etc. just fine, and they are cheaper ($6.95/month). Don't know about running a mailing list there, though.
